The story of our department begins in the 1940s, when the Black Oak Volunteer Fire Department (BOVFD) first opened its doors at a modest two-bay firehouse located at 6055 W 29th Ave. in Gary, Indiana. That same spirit of service led BOVFD to host the very first Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association (IVFA) Convention on June 27th, 1948—marking a historic milestone in our state’s firefighting community.
For decades, firefighters responded to calls from Station 1, serving the community with courage and commitment. As the need for expanded coverage grew, Station 2 was established at 3955 W 47th Avenue to better serve the surrounding area. Eventually, the City of Gary annexed the area surrounding Station 1, leading to its closure and the relocation of all apparatus and equipment to Station 2.
In November 1975, the Lake Ridge Volunteer Fire Department (LRVFD) was officially established as a tax-exempt nonprofit, continuing operations out of the 47th Ave. station.
In 2014, the Lake Ridge Fire Protection District Board began planning a new facility to better serve the community—one that would house both LRFPD and LRVFD offices, along with a modern six-bay fire station. That vision became reality at 2301 W 47th Ave., when we held a heartfelt dedication ceremony on March 25, 2018.
